This is Baling not Bali

Over the long weekend break , we took a drive to Baling for a therapeutic dip in a hotspring. Here , I share with you a few pictures of the district. More on the roadtrip as well as how to get there later.

Yes , this is not Bali . This is Baling , Malaysia.
Where the limestone hills meet the paddy fields ....

Kedai Makan Pak Teh - Baling

We stumbled upon this humble shack while searching for a tea stop.  The chef is a stocky Malay lady and boy ,is she  one darned good cook. Recipes are authentic Penang and very old ones at that.
Great Penang hawker food in Baling. Can you believe that ?  Of course I was sceptical at first but after that....well, you'll see.

Medina Thai Palace

Got some great recommendations from a local Thai lady who told me to look for Alliance Bank after the Thai temple located near a roundabout. Judging from the number plates parked outside, it must be good.

Zakaria Laksa Teluk Kechai ( U )

The shop lies along a busy main road.

A constant stream of visitors, who park their car alongside, make this place, highly visible to the curious, who might not know about their existence.

Numeral Eight Curry House, Alor Setar ( PF )

Update Nov 2014 :

I have bad news and I have good news. The good news is, they now cater to Malay & Muslim customers. The bad news is, the high quality is gone. The beef rendang was dry, the fish head curry was not as delightful as before. They even serve the weirdest Chinese tea I've ever had in my life.
Not returning. So long, farewell, goodbye forever. Wasted my time. Wasted my money. Wasted my petrol.

Plenty of fans will agree that this huge bungalow with no signboard is one of Alor Setar's best food venues.

Perfectly manicured lawns in a pleasant environment filled with interesting features greets every visitor....

Petai Tree on the NSE

This is a petai flower. It looks like a weird furry ball on the end of a long reed . The yellow tinge you see at the end, consists of tiny flowers filled with pollen .

When the surrounding fluff falls off , it will look something like a queer bulb

This is what it looks like up in the tree

Eventually, those bulbs will grow and form these hanging clusters of pods

The most amazing thing is, I spotted this tree at a PLUS reststop on the NSE.

If you're keen, keep a look out after the Sungai Dua toll plaza for this small rest stop. It lies just before a water logged marsh that flanks both sides of the highway

(U ) 122KM for Pekasam,Jeruk and Sagun- Alor Setar

I jump at every opportunity to take a drive into Alor Setar.

Other than a couple of unforgettable great eats which I will divulge to you another time,
I know I'm really there for the sight of the expansive paddy fields .

Just like the wheat fields in Europe.
