Vintage trams , trolleys and streetcars - the cutest part of San Francisco

Streetcars and trams are all part and parcel of San Francisco .
They are such bona fide vintage , working antiques , my heart skipped a beat , each time one after the next whizzed past me .
Felt as if time had stopped and I was in a warped bubble straight out of the 50s .

Because there are so many steep hills , this mode of transportation is not just all pretty and fun , they are a downright necessity .

Unless you are training for the Olympics or want to loose not just your weight but your kneecaps too , then your own 2 feet will stand you in good stead . If not , take the tram !

Initially wanted to do the city FIT .
However , the agent shook her head and said flat outright ( they always underestimate me ) that it was impossible as the location of my hotel was
" in the middle of nowhere "
Not exactly true but neither was she wrong .
I would have to Uber to town and back . And that would cost a pretty sum indeed .
Bummer .

Thus , all I could do was look on wistfully since I did not have the luxury of time .

These vehicles have a long history between them  . Some of them have actually been rehabilitated and brought out of retirement from the original states they first plied .

If you think that's unusual , well it isn't . Our current Penang ferry fleet for example , used to trawl the waters in Hong Kong .

Introducing the green , red and cream number 1055 .
Built for the Philadelphia Transportation company . Brought back into service in 1985 .

This streetcar below is the one that is almost always featured in tv flicks .

While you can still catch some similarly designed cars in Sofia or some Eastern European country which I haven't been to , as you can see , the Americans are exceptionally marvellous maintenance experts .

Gray and blue 1070 has a
red wheel and wing badge in front .
Originally from Newark .

Colour shades have probably not been updated and that's a really great thing  . The city should capitalise on these streetcars the way that little red tram in Istiklal shines it's way to soften the hearts of even the most hardcore of travellers .

1076 was built in 1946 for use in Washington D.C .

Aqua , green and persimmon is so lovingly restored , it reminds me of my Olivetti typewriter . Sighh.......

Hailing all the way from Toronto comes 1074 .
Maroon , black , cream .
Bloody chic and sexy as hell .

1009 is painted as a tribute to Dallas but has been a San Francisco native all of its life .
Cream , black , red and silver , I wonder if this is where In n Out got their colour inspiration from .

Location : San Francisco , USA
