3 reasons why Teluk Bahang dam is not for swimming

Not gonna dwell on the recent drowning incident that happened during the Dragon Boat Race. Just gonna let you, the reader know why you shouldn't swim in this dam.

Well, first reason is common sense. This is after all a catchment area that provides water to the surrounding areas.

Secondly, ( what some people suspect)  there are underground streams flowing into this place from the hills.
So while the water looks still, you can't tell if there is some sort of current that can pull you under, especially when it's been pouring uphill.

Next reason is this ( what I heard from some older folks)

If you notice carefully, there is a small temple somewhere towards the end of the man made lake.
What most people don't know is that before the area was flooded , locals used to go down there as there was supposed to be a certain kind of deity/ spirit/ dato residing there.
Why they went to consult or pay their respect to it, I have no idea, but apparently, the area where it resided was flooded during the construction of the dam and the temple shifted to higher ground.
But because the original place of residence is under water, locals in the know, will forbid you to jump in. And no, they're not gonna tell you this reason, because you might think they're crazy.

It's easy to write this off as hocus pocus and it's up to you to decide if this is merely superstitious crap that I'm relaying back to you or not.
But try to take into account the other 2 more reasonable reasons and I am sure you might want to think twice about wanting to cool off here, no matter how inviting the waters look.

Inasmuch as we'd like to pooh pooh the supernatural, we have to accept that there are more things on heaven and earth that we know about. What we don't see or hear are most commonly because we have not devised an instrument that can detect or measure it.

We can only offer our sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of that lost boy.
