Chicken Claypot House - Phoenix Reincarnation , an Imperial soup you can now afford

Chicken Claypot House has managed to draw in quite a crowd. Located in the former Joo Seong restaurant on Macalister Road , it is Singaporean in origin with 3 outlets on the republic and Penang is so blessed to be chosen as the venue of their very first foray on Malaysian soil .

In their employment is a young workforce of capable , well trained , quite upbeat staff , who can converse so fluently in Penang Hokkien , Cantonese , Mandarin and probably other dialects...this is nothing short of a miracle on Penang island, very impressive leh .
Having such staff makes it easier for them to impart the know-how to customers , on how to go about ordering your meal here.

You need to know that this is not your regular claypot rice joint. Yes, you have one claypot rice option but you also have 2 soup options for hotpot / steamboat purposes.

I am going to chuck 2 options aside and tell you about their signature dish .....Pork Belly Chicken....also known as Phoenix Reincarnation soup .
What is essentially the secret beauty tool, a consort to Emperor Qianlong used to increase her beauty and gain his attention until she became a favourite .
Meaning the Emperor's consort drank this and glowed her way into his heart . If this sounds like promotional fib-a-lot to you , after you have a meal here and you glow so radiantly no matter how much junk you have been consuming like I have , you will change your tune as well.

See this pricing list on the table.
Just like ordering sushi from a conveyor belt right ?

Well , not exactly .
You walk up here to where the chillers are , take your pick of the super duper fresh ingredients that are so damned fresh , I swear we never have to leave Penang ever again to devour farm fresh vegies only Cameron Highlands can produce  .

Good system to preserve and ensure freshness. Everything is cling wrapped and chilled in small batches.

Think I spy some sliced abalone and yup I definitely want that !

The following posts onwards is for the benefit of those too "paiseh" to ask.

After you order your Pork Belly Chicken claypot soup , it will arrive looking like this. This is the small bowl , ya , there is an even bigger one .
Where were we ? Ya , so it will be placed on an induction cooker custom built into the table . Leave it to bubble and request for a bowl of rice ( extra charge ) if you need that in your diet .

At this point , the soup has not begun to boil. Was a bit disappointed as we both thought there were too little ingredients inside for RM35 so off to the chiller we went to lug back some additional ingredients which will cost us extra.

From this modest heap of 1 plate of sliced abalone , 2 plates of chinese cabbage and 1 shimeji mushroom ....we went on to include yet a 3rd plate of chinese cabbage ,1 fishball ( not the usual Penang made ones ) another round of shimeji ( brown species ) plus one oyster mushroom .

Ya , ya ...we pigged out.
The soup stock had a hint of ginger , fragrant white peppercorn seeds , bitter herb and a faint aroma of smooth Chinese wine . Boom. Nice man .
Cooked in claypot , the texture of all the ingredients turned so maddeningly silky , gosh we threw caution to the wind and just ate to our hearts content .

All the extra paid for the additional order was worth it. I glowed a sweet pink as if I'd just stepped out from a Swedish herbal sauna and unlike other steamboat meals we have had , we felt reenergised after this .
Just go easy on the red pounded chillies . I think those are from China and boy will they sting your tongue numb !

Highly , highly recommended. Currently this is the number one steamboat place in my eyes . Excellent ingredients , very good for health , so incredibly delish and won't cost you that much !

Location : Macalister Road next to the Umno Building .
