Restoran ZJ Bahagia - a massive kampung feast

Had stumbled upon this place by chance. Was teeming with sooo many people , I just had to try it out .

From my observation , the locale seems quite conservative . The few Chinese shoplots on the main road have been taken over by Malay proprietors . While the Chinese diner is a rare sight , I'm a huge fan of Malay cooking and thus am determined to get a quick fix .

Behold the glorious spread . Variety so vast it looks like a hotel buffet from this angle !
Except here , under the unforgiving hot roof , you will have to weather the sweltering heat and sweat it out .
Most of all , even with so much food churned out , the taste is not compromised nor neglected . Unbelievable .

There's a whole section dedicated to grilled fish . Just a few plates consist of chicken .

Further down , I am grinning at the unbelievable array of kerabu and curries , some of which I'm seeing for the first time in Penang .
Popular dishes are consistently topped up .

That's not all , behind that , you can find many types of salted fishes , one of which , I am sure , has got to be pekasam , ( a fermented delicacy from the northern states ) in the rack above .

My village feast cost me a massive MYR 18.50 .
Consists of 1 big fat grilled squid ( very charred but very yummy ) , 1 small crab ( soooo good ) , 3 medium prawns ( ok only ) , mosaic lala shellfish cooked with limau purut leaves and pineapples ( omggooood sooooooo good ! ) , 1 bergedil ( bit too oily ) , fried fresh abalone mushrooms ( too salty ) , fresh ulam leaves ( 2 types I am seeing for the first time ever , thai basil leaf not included ) , rice and a cup of teh tarik .

Overall , while the dishes aren't exactly cheap , a lot of working Malay ladies are pouring in to do takeaways .
So I guess that must mean that this stall is pretty reasonable . Especially if you consider how fresh every ingredient is .

Location : Permatang Pauh , Penang
