Restoran Riverbank - black pomfret claypot curry

Riverbank is just a few doors away from the old Hupsa .
From the outside , it looks all quiet with no action ....

...but once you step inside , you'll find that the place is bustling with a sizeable number of silver haired regulars enjoying their meal .

2 ladies behind the counter beckon us to sit .

We park ourselves all the way at the back , directly in front of where the staff are having their meal .

Although the steamed siakap comes highly recommended , my nose tells me we ought to have what they're having .
Claypot fish curry it is then .

His choice.
The softest calamari , that still has not attained a springy texture yet , fried together with dried chillies and a sauce that is an old recipe which I probably tried as a child ( you cannot find this taste anymore today )

Could not avoid ordering the kangkong belacan after I saw the dish gracing a few tables .
Comes with plenty of chopped har mai , not too much stinky belacan though .
Crunchy textured stalks , slightly stringy  slimy leaves . I like !

You're probably wondering why people in the northern states consume so much black pomfret. Well , the supply we get is extremely fresh with none of that associated unappetizing smell so prevalent in KL  .

Curry is thick and very powdery ,almost like a Masaman yet leaning more towards a less watered down version of Hainan Tropika's , with a robust strong aroma yet not too fiery .
It works in enveloping and heightening the natural sweetness and tenderness of the ladies fingers , to a mouthwatering locked in flavour you won't believe was possible .
Brinjals feels as if they were cooked in salted fish gulai while the tomatoes are a delightful addition .

One bite of the black pomfret and I am sold .  Very creamy especially if you enjoy the skin . Perfectly cut with no out of place , tears  . Love it !

Quick boiled salted vegetable soup .
The perfect pick me up for a tiring day . Expected a double boiled version . Usually , a quick boiled soup is bound to be a failure . Still , I'm ever hopeful ..... bingo !

With this , everything goes so well together , it became so addictive , my tummy ended up containing more liquid soup than curry .
Especially loved the deep fried garlic .
Thumbs up for this .
Never had better .

Location : Alor Setar

Price : All 4 dishes above ,with rice and chinese tea , less than MYR 70

Totally irrelevant note : to me ( don't know about you ) one of the chefs resembles a thin Thaksin .

Tip : if you're not too keen on black pomfret , you may replace it with white pomfret , grouper , seabass etc .
