( U ) Famous Nasi Kandar - Juru R&R

Update April 2015 :
Probably due to GST , a lot of stalls here have closed down . Most think it is to restart as a new company under a new name but in this case , to avoid paying backtaxes . That's what everyone thinks. Me I hope it's not because of a tussle for business where the good ones are ditched for hopeless operators who shouldn't even be given the licence to hold a frying ladle.
Currently lots of shops here are in a mess. Go elsewhere for your fix . The nasi kandar in Juru autocity is the nearest to this.

You really don't need to drive all the way into Penang island for a wholesome Nasi Kandar meal .

Because this little highway rest stop along the North South Expressway ( south bound ), is where you can get one of the best.Period.

One of the reasons , is because they have access to extremely fresh meats and seafoods.
Since they cook in small quantities, constantly topping up throughout the day, quality control is guaranteed, making it a win win situation for all.

I'll give you a quick run down of their specialities...

Kangkong cooked in dhall.
Tastes like bayam ( spinach ) because it's so creamy and silky. Very yummy.
Never seen this elsewhere but here.

Beef Stomach lining.

A dish that's mostly sold by Malays and not Mamaks.
Another hard to find dish.

Compared to the small squid curry you see below,
the large squid in comparison is just spectacular.
The texture is soooo incredibly tender, yet chewy.
No pictures to show as it's sold out today.

Depending on your timing ( and luck ), make sure you grab these fishes, once they come straight out of the pan and onto the counter .
Lightly coated in a delightfully crisp batter, with a bigger assortment,of all time favourite fishes, than other places.
They even have catfish at the far end , which happens to be another Malay dish, which you hardly see in Mamak outlets.

And wooo.....I got lucky today !
Hot off the wok !
Marinated with a heavier tinge of ginger than elsewhere, the chicken is so fresh and perfectly deep fried, golden juices drip out when you lift it up.

This is the rest stop you have to look out for.
The one with the first Shell petrol station , after turning out from Penang Bridge.

Location : Juru R&R rest stop

Hygiene level : Much, much cleaner than most . Thumbs up.

On the issue of flies : Instead of getting turned off by flies, you should be glad they even want to sit on your plate as they're indicators that your seafood does not contain formaldehyde .
