Umno building concrete and antenna crash - Macalister Road

Emporis.com states that

  • The UMNO Tower is one of the few skyscrapers of the world engineered to use wind to create interior comfort. If necessary all office corridors can be ventilated naturally.
  • All elevator spaces, stairways and toilets are ventilated naturally and lit by natural sunlight, which provides for safe use and low energy consumption.
  • A set of wing walls has been installed in key positions according to an analysis of wind direction data at the building location; these walls direct the wind into special balcony zones, which serve the natural ventilation and cooling with containers with air locks.
  • TR Hamzah & Yeang won the 1998 RAIA International Award for the design of this building.
Only passed by Macalister Road after the storm was over. Knew something was seriously wrong,as the police was diverting traffic away .At that time I was going to catch Man of Steel, so this had to wait.

2 over hours later, after the show finished, at precisely 11.39pm, traffic was still being diverted as you can see below.

The area still drew a curious crowd, morbidly fascinated by the ghastly destruction that lay before their eyes.

As I drew nearer, I realised, I'd have to use the zoom function, as the police deployed this safe distance, to keep us busybodies out.
" Batu jatuh" ( concrete toppled ) one of the traffic cops mentioned, when I asked him what had just happened.

Eyewitness accounts differed. Most of the locals and foreign workers, there claimed that a lorry driver was dead. However, this has not been confirmed yet.
Another group of Machas, told me that when the lorry carrying gas tanks ( yes ! really ! ) was hit, the tanks flew all over the place !!!
Didn't see any lorry from where I was. All I could see the roof of a white car ( at least that's what all of us thought it was)  that was being scrapped off the road by the tractor below

Twisters have become so common on the island these days. But today's one was so ferocious, it caused vehicles, traffic lights, properties, even traffic lights and bus stops to be destroyed, with countless trees uprooted today !

That some netizens have commented that this is the second Thursday for another freak mishap to occur doesn't  help to calm the jitters. Tomorrow is another brand new day, let's hope no more untoward tragedies such as this occur anymore.
