Had this dish in an airconditioned foodcourt because I didn't want anymore surprises. There's chicken, sawi, bitter pea eggplants etc etc, it's sour , light and very refreshing but quite spicy. While there are many variants to Kaeng Som aka Gaeng Som , this version uses flower pods called Dok Khae, hence the name. The blossoms are almost like papaya buds only bigger with longer petals. Reputed to be good for headache , vision and flu , definitely a soup with benefits.
The 2nd dish we tried , Thai beef noodle soup , though darker in appearance with more spices added in , has a taste that leaned closer to Vietnamese but as I am no fan of Viet cuisine nor anything remotely close to it , all it took was one sip for me to write it off and push it back to him.
Don't like the soup , nor the texture of the noodles.Partly explains why Viet cuisine is hard pressed to gain a foothold in Malaysia . One chew feels like taking a whole load of toothpaste with your meal.
The Thai version is no different. Maybe heavier and richer , still no different.
Since many of the staff here were making a beeline to buy the dish below , I joined in. Conclusion : Yet another Thai-Chinese hybrid which with a no kick factor.
While the foodcourt up in Gateway Ekkamai fares much better , the staff in this place are much friendlier and I would recommend that you give the Kaeng Som Dhok Kae a try. The stall is right at the back .
Location : Big C , On Nut ( top floor )
