Early Penang durians - April 2015

Ah the thorny fruits hung up for sale are beginning to grow in numbers day by day. From a few miserable ones to this much now . Soon , the new season will be in full swing and I think we have been eyeing the stalls long enough to launch into a small but expensive indulgence today. Look at the guy pose as if those were trophies behind him.

It's been drizzling, the weather is damp and cold,
, perfect , let's eat.

For the uninitiated, this here is a list of the varieties of durian available in Malaysia.

We usually get the owner to recommend. And because we like the fruit slightly bitter and very creamy,
but we're not so confident on the quality and just want a small fruit, he shows us one which costs a stiff RM45 .
The flesh once eaten warms the cheeks like wine.
Paying that anount for a single fruit, gets you these services.
Someone to open the husk, spread out the capsules with pulp in it.
I told you it's a small one.

Also included is a cup of water , tissue and table service.

Verdict : best if you can wait a bit more but if you cannot you can start eating already. As it is we are getting outstation visitors from as far as Terengganu , homing into Penang for the thorny delights. Locals who cannot wait anymore are getting in on the act too.
