Kampar Fish Jelly Restaurant - Jalan Aziz Ibrahim

There are many people from Perak working and living in Penang. Hope that explains the popularity and proliferation of joints selling staple Perak favourites such as pakcham kai and Kampar fishballs.

Having patronised this shop from the first time they set up shop near Bayan Bay , I can tell you the changes they have undergone.

First up is the workforce. Today , there are lots of foreigners who can communicate in English here. In the beginning there were more Chinese staff.
This batch is very efficient and so hardworking to boot , I am sure some girls will be eyeing the more capable ones already.

Next.
From no aircond, today the restaurant is fully airconditioned.

Also , the menu has expanded to include extra dishes such as Chicken wings , Pork trotters , Yam rice and stewed chicken feet even.

The order taker is the oldest man in the shop.
You wait in line until he comes up to you.
Just point at the foods displayed and he will jot it down together with your table number.
All patrons who walk in here , young or old , are very healthy looking with a radiant glow about them.
I'm the exception. I eat a lot of fried unhealthy rich junk and variety of cuisines other than Chinese. So you can count me out.

Our humble feast consists of
1 small Hakka mee , 1 yam rice , a platter of beancurd skin stuffed with fishpaste and a mixed soup bowl of goodies .
Wait ....that's not so humble. Oh who cares. Let's chow.

There's only another operator in Butterworth I know who prepares Hakka mee.
This version is totally different from all the Hakka mee we know.
Tastes more like a slimey konlow beef nooodles from Jalan Silang in KL .....with taugey added.
Nice . Recommended.

Platter of Golden Eggs is an art .
They've somehow removed the yolk and replaced it with
perfectly round fishpaste in its place.
Seriously don't know how they do this.
Amazing.
Taste is just so , so , as I much prefer these eggs with yolk on and a layer of fishpaste outside rather than inside. Now that's much tastier but this is definitely much more novel to look at.

Soup stock is not exactly my cup of tea but I need this to dip the beancurd skin and soften them up a bit.
You'll need to add pepper and more salt or soy to bring out the oomph otherwise it comes off as unnaturally sweet .
Inside is a clutch of fishballs that have a texture that is close to Korean fishpaste , pork meatballs , aubergine , and stuffed green chilli

Verdict : quite a satisfying and filling meal

Damage : all the above plus 2 drinks cost less than MYR 24.

Location : Jalan Aziz Ibrahim , Bayan Lepas , Penang
