6pm on the south side of the island , is still much too early for dinner.
Deep fried ayam bawang will be your best option . Thing is whether you wanna opt for the Malay version or the Mamak version.
We had both .
First up .... the Malay stall at Kompleks MPPP , Jalan Rajawali .
Nasi Dalca Ayam Bawang .
Here's the thing about Nasi Dalca...it is getting increasingly rare and unlike the nasi tomato which only a Penang Mamak can cook extremely well , nasi dalca is an acquired taste , which not everyone finds agreeable .
Usually found in Gelugor or the fringes of Jelutong , this stall in Bayan Lepas has managed to garner a loyal following amongst fans of the dish .
Deep fried chicken served here is very juicy. I like that. I also love seeing that piece of banana leaf underneath it .
But the nasi dalca left me this way.
Not accustomed to the flavour. Tastes like briyani rice boiled with dhall curry. Difficult to finish for me , very jelak , but hey..... don't take my word for it as the stall has lots of fans who will patiently wait in line , just to get their fix.
Next , the Mamak version.
Wedged inside the rather scruffy Jalan Tengah flats , spot the queue and you're at the right place .
Saltier and fried for much longer , the chicken is not as juicy as what is served at the first place, but no less flavourful. While it is much more fragrant , not to mention saltier , any true blue islander will find the kandar version here just up their alley.
Yes , the kuah mix is good but the potato wedges are tossed in a lethal sambal paste that packs quite the punch . Do not omit the potato dish.
As this second joint mostly does takeaways , if you're in the area , make sure you come after 6pm .
There is a 3rd famous stall but because the traffic leading to the venue can get really bad , and we'll save it for another day .
Location : Penang
