Hawker style oyster and peanut porridge - one pot slow cooker recipe

Sometimes I get a craving for this breakfast offering sold by some hawkers in Kuala Lumpur at
Brickfields and Peel Road to be exact .
As I simply cannot find this dish in Penang , I have no choice but to cook it myself .

However , I'm certainly not about to break my back over this dish . No fanning of charcoal embers for me thank you.

You'll be glad to know that if you want to try the recipe I am about to provide below , all you just need a slow cooker to do the job . Not only that , very basic ingredients are used thus the cost is quite minimal .

While you also need to allocate 4 to 5 hours of cooking time , because you are slow cooking it , you have time to do other things before it is ready for consumption .

Ajinomoto is a crucial ingredient used by most hawkers in Malaysia . You can omit that , but the result would be home cooked rather than hawker style , so to use or not to use lies entirely on your preference .

Ingredients :

1. A handful of shelled groundnuts
2. A handful of dried mussels  ( not dried oysters although the hawkers call this dish oyster and peanut porridge )
3. Pork bones according to how porky or less porky you may want the flavour to be
4. Dai tao choy ( a preserved vegetable ) according to taste
5. White pepper
6. Salt
7. Linseed oil
8. Spring onions
9. Ajinomoto
10. 1 and a half cups of rice

Method :

1. Wash and soak the peanuts then put to boil in the slow cooker with enough water to cover it

2 . When it comes to a boil , place in the pork bones and remove the scum

3 . Prepare the dried mussels . Soak , cut into 3 pieces so you get to the hair and throw it away

4. Place all the chopped mussels into the pot together with the dai tao choy and boil further

5. Test the peanuts . When softened , put in washed uncooked rice and add more water if needed . Add salt according to your preference .

6. The dish is ready when the rice reaches that texture above . You may add a few dashes of Ajinomoto at this juncture .

To serve :

1. Prepare a rice bowl and add a dash of white pepper , linseed oil and soy sauce at the bottom of the bowl

2. Ladle in the porridge , top it off with chopped spring onions .

3. Enjoy !

This recipe is reputed to have anti ageing properties . You can take me as living proof of that even though I don't consume this as often as I would love to .

Have fun trying . It's really easy to cook , easy to digest , very tasty and very satisfying .
