KSB Cahaya New Abu - finally , some real mamak food

You have absolutely no idea how difficult it is to find a good mamak stall selling yummy roti canai , mee goreng and maggi sup , at night , in Georgetown these days .

A lot of the former haunts now rely on factory produced roti canai dough which tastes really awful and the cooks under their employment have tastebuds that are world's apart from us regular Malaysians hence the decline in orders , when it comes to those 3 dishes .

Until you swing into Macalister Lane .
It's close to 11 pm but this quiet lane is filled with hungry owls  .
A scene that is increasingly rare nowadays .

Waaaaaaa.....will you take a look at the beaming crowd ?

Originally from Dato Koyah road , it's been two years since they relocated here but only today did we find them since we hardly take a turn in here as we only know the place to be alive in the mornings .
It took a shortcut where my jaw almost dropped when I saw the crowd of mostly young Chinese patrons .

Nooooo wonder lah all the other mamak stalls are so quiet . Everybody comes here now for their roti , mee and maggi fix .

Unless you are very blur , I'm sure you will notice the two gentle giants running the show . Very polite and soft spoken fellows ... the service they mete out is grand prix fast . Also their memory is sharper than a herd of elephants combined . They remember everything you ordered in flashback sequence , I tell you !

Wait till you hear them mentally calculate your bill .
Huh ....aaaamazing .

Roti canai version , is as oily as the morning stall at Transfer Road .
However , the downside is that they have been precooked thus I ordered a Roti Telur to bypass that problem .
While I don't fancy the curry that comes with it , the parcel of bread  has that all familiar palm oil fragrance while tasting slightly caramel charred and crisp .

In the foreground are Roti John and Murtabak but I'm seeing a lot of orders for their Roti Tissue which is sweet and so big they bring it to your table on two plates !

Some local patrons swear by their Mee Goreng ....they absolutely love it . For me , because , it has been mass cooked ahead plus it has many sauces in it I didn't find it up my alley  . No , I don't like their Mee Goreng but lots of other people did , so I guess you should try it once to decide for yourself .

What I really , really like best is their fried chicken . Very fresh and big in size , with tasty batter and ginger like marinade , you should try to get it when it has just been taken out of the wok . Stalk the cook if you have to as it is super light cripsy and heavenly at that stage .

Best part of it all is , during a downward period where other mamak shops have deteriorated due to having Banglas , Afghans , Suluks and Rohingyas in the kitchen , this place still cooks up familiar foods the way we like it .

Makes me so glad to know that the cooks here still know how to cook our favourite lazy bachelor and bachelorette dish ....the Maggi Sup with egg and that ability alone is enough to make it rise above the rest .

* there are no pics of what we ate as it was so dark where we were seated plus we had to contend with an ice truck reversing next to us at the time *

Location : Macalister Lane , Penang

Warning : the cooking area is a huge mess , so if you are the type that looses your appetite easily , I wouldn't wander there if I were you .

Operating hours : open till late
