( U ) Hammer Bay Ikan Bakar, Jalan Bayan Bay

Lots of people like to come here because of cheap seafood dining by the sea with stunning views of the Penang Bridge.

There are 3 operators here. Two of them use gimmicks to attract customers.
One features a sampan ,the other a water feature. The last one nothing .
If you order from anyone of them, you need to know where their designated seating area is.

All this time I have been I patronising the more run down, no frills, no gimmicks place, run by this guy with an army haircut.

His ikan bakar is extremely addictive, same goes for his version of lightly coated sotong goreng tepung.

His stall is where this blue tiled seafood counter begins.

However, today we decided to switch and try out his competitor who operates from this fancily landscaped counter .

Why ? Well,he recently transformed his dining area by the sea, to look like a mini wonderland constructed from recycled materials.

Carnival like atmosphere. Fountain sprouting from tortoise pond. Kids play area. Wow ! Will you just look at that ? So creative and imaginative ! Who can resist ?

Compare the vast difference between the two. One dazzling.... the other so dowdy. Round one's winner is of course the Penang Pesta wannabe.

But what's most important is, is the food that they serve here actually good ?
Especially since their walls have pictures of celebrities like Mila and Nasrizal Ngasri posing for pictures after their meal here .

The waitress recommends Tomyam Poktek. Filled to the brim with kapah clams, one small head from a siakap, a few prawns, half a ketam bunga and sliced sotong for $20 only .
While I agree that it is sheer value for money, I just don't like what is basically a sourish tasting cilipadi, tomato and lengkuas soup.
The fish smelt of earth. The prawns were from the supermarket . The clams were tasty but had small spots of mud.

The sotong goreng tepung was like murukku. So hard. Served COLD.... lembik already. Made me loose my appetite.

While the telur dadar was like a fried cotton dishcloth with eggs and salt plus oil. Terrible.

I deleted both pics out of disgust.

Thank goodness the ikan bakar saved the day.

The dips that came with the meal were excellent .

But at $71,inclusive of drinks, dining here is certainly not cheap. I wonder if the improvements have been costed into our bill ?

I have learnt my lesson and from now on, am staying loyal to the crewcut abang with no fancy lights .
