( NH ) Sea Pearl Lagoon Cafe,Tanjung Tokong

This cafe is situated just next to the famous 18th century Tua Peh Kong temple , where the burning of jossticks is read annually, to predict the robustness or sluggishness of the Malaysian economy.

The village outside of the temple compound, is a Hakka fishing village that was one of the earliest settlements on Penang island.

Thus if you dine here, you're actually taking in a piece of history. There are war bunkers from the previous world war and look out towers such as this tall structure below.

The dining area tapers into a gentle curve out to sea and some people like to eat over on this side, when there is available table space .

Today,we are here not for dinner nor lunch but a snack.
The satay is, the best in the world. Get it from this couple.
The recipe is old school, like from P.Ramlee's era.

There you have it...thick, delicious, really good, old fashioned satay with fresh crunchy onions and room temperature cucumber that's not been soaked in kapur powder to make it crunchy and ice cold. 60 cents a stick.

Another must have is the spring rolls ($ 3.50 per roll) with generous fillings of shredded turnips and carrots and paper thin skin that tears away beautifully.

A real work of fine art, embedded with lots of love, pride and care. Very typical Penang signature fare.

We also ordered the squid rings from the same stall but this dish tastes more western than typical Penang fare.
$12 for delightfully fine batter and squid that is both meaty, firm and fresh.

Our meal is interrupted by a lady who is quite insistent that we put loose coins into her tin box. She claims to represent this organisation but the way she goes about her donation drive is pretty aggressive to the point of harassment as she won't take no for an answer.
He gives her 2 ringgit and she hands us this piece of paper.

The entire meal costs us just $25 not inclusive of drinks. Nicer, fresher, tastier and a whole lot more worth it, than franchised kopitiam fare if you ask me.

Location : Tanjong Tokong

Directions : after Tesco Tanjong Pinang on your right, there will be an overhead bridge,do not pass it, keep right, take the first turning into the right at the traffic lights just before the bridge. Go straight past some flats and you will come to the entrance of a small chinese village. Go to the end and look for parking there. If you come during the peak hours, parking will be a big headache. You might have to back out and find a space elsewhere.

Chowtime : Lunch till  9pm
