Soon Lai Seafood - Jelutong ( NH )

Cold nights call for hearty gulais to warm the tummy, and where better to start than at Soon Lai Seafood ?

Usually the place is so packed, the pace so frantic, there's hardly any time to think, when you place your order.

Tonight, was a departure from the norm. The rain had seen to that.

They're reknowned for their crabs and thai pork leg,yet somehow we've never found those dishes to our liking.

This delightful stingray gulai ($13) is the freshest I've ever had.
So smooth and silky, was the fish meat,it practically slid from spoon into my eagerly awaiting lips.

Heavenly....just heavenly.

The spices are heady, very hot and packs an eye opening wallop that successfully works up the appetite.

If you think that was good, their steamed shellfish ($8) is even better,it's insanely addictive !

Make sure you relish the liquid cradled beneath and savour the wonderful combustion of 100% pure raw garlic, bird's eye chilli and ginger in wine,to the finish.

Douse the fire with a sip of spinach soup/bayam thn'g ($8) teeming with tiny anchovies, boxton seeds, chopped century eggs and salted duck eggs.

Alas the bean sprouts ($5) did not live up to expectations.
The pieces of salt fish were not only hard and inedible, the dish lacked enough salt, and the beans were a wee bit overdone, lacking that juicy zingy crunch.

Nevertheless, this glass of fresh nutmeg juice more than made up for the tiny hiccup.
Better than a can of coke at perking you up.
With a preserved kanna as a bonus.

Total damage : $43 inclusive of steamed white rice and drinks

Price range : cheap to moderate

The shop is on your right.
