In the morning, there are a few great hokkien mee stalls on Penang island. Far less though at night.
This place ranks in my acceptable category when I'm looking for a decent bowl of Hokkien Mee after 8
There is a silly new rule in force now.
If you sit inside this shophouse where 888 is housed , you may order food from other operators.
But should you decide to sit elsewhere in other kopitiams, you can forget about trying it out because the others apparently won't allow you to call this hokkien mee over to their side.
While waiting we ordered geng-geng(mata kucing boiled with melon strips), a soya bean drink and a bowl of ice kacang.
The geng-geng was super sweet.
Ice kacang no different.
Soya bean tasted like skimmed soya skin cream juice.
Burn....
Don't remember this drink stall being so awful ?? Sadly it is.
Small beehoon order arrives quarter of the way through our uber sweet mountain of goo .
Other than the nicely done egg and pork slices,
the prawns have zero natural sweetness, beansprouts are a little overdone and there's no kangkong .
Next.
Another small bowl of beehoon .This time with add ons like one braised, sliced, hard boiled egg and chopped belly siew yok .
The siew yok is great. It's firm, salty, tasty and goes extremely well with the hokkien mee.
Huge chunk of egg makes up for everything lacking.
Finally
Large bowl of beehoon mee with additional intestines, egg and siew yok
If you're still keen on trying this out, keep a lookout for these stalls in front of a row of shophouses. 888 lies in between them .
