(NH) Leong Kee - Pasir Putih, Ipoh

Tapaued the porridge here eons ago and never forgot the taste of the meatballs . And that was it , because we always seemed to arrive at the wrong time. Thus I whooped with joy upon finding the tables lining the five foot way today.

A whole bowl of pork offal, floating about in white goo, isn't exactly my idea of a great gourmet experience by the roadside, in fact it's pretty gross out for me, so I requested for just meatballs with deep fried intestines. The best thing about the meatballs here, is that they're so soft and yummy ( think they've got some luncheon meat or salted fish minced into them ) and so plentiful. Was dissappointed with the 'cheong' . Immersed into my bowl , crumbled into fine crumbs. Not whole chopped pieces .
Furthermore, the rice porridge smelt sourish , like the rice were fermenting into the state of tapai......for this , although the meatballs win hands down, in my opinion, the porridge sold by the stall at Tong Sui Kai is much, much better.
Don't even remember it being this bad the last time. Maybe they soaked the rice too long, in order to soften it and save on fuel.

These additional dishes were a departure from the norm.
Just felt like pigging out.

Blanched Taugeh .....simple dish that is pure heaven.
Not too salty, lightly flavoured by fresh sesame oil that's not overwhelming in its fragrance, very juicy, naturally sweet  ....a dish non vegetarians would fight over.
So freaking good.
This place, is one of the reasons why Ipoh beansprouts are world class !

Pakcham kai on the other hand, was too greasy and the meat rough, although the skin was jelly smooth. You have to eat this while it's still warm. The instant it got cold, nobody but me touched it. Honest !

Koochi moochi had no complaints about the noodles. Now that WAS weird ! Stole a piece of fishball from him. Not something you can find anywhere. Quite unique if I may add.

Saving the best for last.
At first, I found it a little odd that the leong chars were served in bowls here .Never expected to be raving over this dessert.
The lady called this " ching leong ". Roughly translated means it's a cooling and detoxifying drink.
Looks like leng chee kang but it's not. Tiny barley beans at the bottom, plenty of kidney beans too, white fungus is actually edible and soft ( in Penang it's mostly hard and plastic like ), the lychee was not sour and the brown liquid tasted of liquorice . Effects could be felt almost immediately !
Bloody hell, this is real, good stuff ! The scalp near my hairline broke out in a river of sweat immediately after consuming half a bowl. Something short of a miracle for me . Will come back for this !

Grass jelly was so effective, the person who drank this felt a chill afterwards. And that's a 'heaty' person to begin with..... people with weaker body constitutions, like me should not take this.

When we left, it was already dark , yet there seemed to be more people, huddled over their bowls, stretched out along 5 shoplots. Let's hope my timing is right again, on the next trip.
