Restoran Kak Ani, Langkawi ( U )

Update Dec 2014 : there's a massive new competitor across the road next to a Shell station. Her prices are higher now and the curry chicken I raved about earlier was just not fragrant nor as good. As for the BBQ selection, this time the prawns lacked umph but the squid was excellent. Probably will only return for the BBQ and skip the rice plus other dishes altogether

-------------------

Just as it's getting harder and harder to find good , tasty Malay food on the northern mainland , this humble little shack, blows me out of my socks .

Barbecued selection is excellent. Don't normally think the world of Percik this and Golek that, but they are experts at slow roasting foods over charcoal fire .
More delicious than an Argentinian assador halfway round the world !

Catfish, large prawn and Kembong fish . All barbecued.
Marinades are PERFECT , they didn't stinge on anything in order to maximise profit.
Never tasted anything as good as this. Ate the skin off the catfish ( it's very 'lemak' ), sucked the prawn shells dry, savoured the soft tender, sweet fish meat.
Beats Kepala Batas ikan bakar hands down.
You must try large prawns while you're in Langkawi as they taste lobster like, ok ?

In fact I went crazy over their kari ayam ( there are 2 versions , both great ) , so much so, that I can only show you a small morsel near the clams which I took to test out before I totally fell in love with it and went for seconds .
Tastes similar to Malaccan Peranakan style Nyonya chicken curry with belacan and dried chilli tumbuk , except that it's a Malay lady chef , who looks like a Samoan, behind in the kitchen, churning out the gamut of curries.
I'm thinking, these recipes are probably really, really old.... passed down many, many, many generations .

Let's take another look at the charred bbq yummies again

...mountains of deep fried goodies
( didn't try them )

Of course you'll wanna know the prices right ?
unbelievable.....

Shoulda gone there when I was in Langkawi. =P

Oh, if you are going to Pangkor, there's this place near the jetty that sells fantastic fried squid: soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside.

Heavenly!
