888 Hokkien Mee ( NH ) - Lorong Mahsuri 2, Bayan Lepas

The long line of cars parked illegally by the roadside show that they are open for business, ready to satiate your night fix for a steaming hot bowl of hearty Hokkien Mee.

Although they share the same name, the food here, in my opinion, tastes different from their original Sar Tiao Lor stall in Georgetown.

Strangely though ( and partly due to the fact that I hate mixing in sambal into my soup ), I swear, the stock , pork slices and prawns, lean more towards KL mee yoke with a block of sugar.

And the siew yoke....hmmm....this recipe's saltier than most places in Penang. There's been so much interstate migration, the lines have been blurred. My guess that the chef learnt his trade from the East Coast.
You can't enjoy the siew yoke this way, as it is purposely made to be harder and drier. You have to place it in your soup and allow the liquid to permeate the crispy skin and meat. That's how Penangites enjoy this accompaniment here.

Wasn't really keen at first on patronising this other stall. However, upon seeing how many customers ordered this as an extra snack , we eventually caved in.

Tender, very tender, Taiwan style fried chicken. Spicy as hell, till the area around my lips starting burning.

Directions : from the Penang Bridge drive all the way towards Bukit Jambul roundabout. Take the 9 o'clock. Keep right. Turn right at the traffic lights. Before you reach a second traffic light junction, keep a look out. The shop is on the right .

Opening hours : evening till around 10pm ( it's very popular in this area, so most times they close earlier even though the signboard says they close at 11.30pm )
