Nona Bali - IJM Promenade

Have consistently been putting it off . Been so reluctant to step foot there , I swapped destinations so many times already .

But ah , this is where the social media steps in. It really does wield a strong influence on us . We do care about other peoples likes and dislikes , even if they're complete strangers .
That's why you're here reading this. We are voyeurs who like to see other peoples life experiences from a safe distance.

Coming down to me , when I see a flight crew come home all the way from the middle east and one of the first restaurant he hits is a Balinese joint , I want to know what I've been missing .

Since Nona Bali is supposed to be the best representation of authentic Balinese cuisine in the Northern region , we're gonna give it a go.

Came armed with a fat wallet since the good and honest foursquare reviewers, said it cost so.
Do not completely rely on Tripadvisor reviews for Penang. There's a lot of fake ,glossed up, pumped up ratings that do not deserve to be on the top 20 lists . A lot of ratings have been manipulated....operators of tourist attractions and restaurants amongst the biggest culprits .

There's just so much love here.
Try to spot the bright smiling friendly handsome face beneath the beautiful batik cloths.
Fixtures are not permanent , if you like what you see , you may buy it so long as it comes with a price tag.
The first oil painting above costs a cool MYR3,300 .

First impressions count. They matter a whole lot and the feeling I get is a gentle pride .
After placing our orders , we are presented with a small basket of nibbles made from flour and a legume that has been painstakingly split into 2.

We tried to keep the bill total low but it was impossible.
If we had wanted to just sit down for a nibble of the much recommended Sate Lilit , made from pounded fish meat embedded with spices and wrapped around a lemongrass stick , I am afraid to admit that food this good just brings out our inner demon , the dormant glutton , right to the surface.
The more we ate, the more it rewrote our opinion on foods we'd grown up on.
Balinese food is like the mother , compared to Malay and Nyonya food. It is on par with Thai food but in my own opinion , the Malay foods I have loved all this while just  paled into the background while Nyonya food seemed to be a copycat playing catch up.
With our resolve gone, we went full steam ahead.

Sambel Udang rice set.
3 medium prawns with a KILLER sambal that has such a hot kick , the increasing build up might just cause your clothes to explode if you throw caution to the wind and lap up everything on this plate up without a care in the world.
Much as I love Malay cuisine, this is so much more refined , and when compared ,  there is  no fight. This wins hands down.

Be Siap Betutu.
Slow roasted was the menu description.
Malaysians call this rendang . Interesting spice composition and marination on the chicken meat.

Sup Be Siap.
In Johor, this would be known as Soto.
Except that instead of compressed rice cubes , there's soo hoon or glass vermicelli inside . A testimony of Chinese influence. My goodness , haven't my people been everywhere.
Emptied the small bowl of deep fried shallots but left the lime slice as it is.

Up to this point , we've had a really satisfying meal experience.

Yes, this painting is for sale too . Didn't check the price tag.

Biu Gulung .
A vanilla ice cream with banana in lightly fried popiah skin .
To die for.
Just so , so , sooo good !
