Kim Poh Roasted Chicken & Duck Rice - Golden Triangle

In Penang , it is common knowledge that there is a coded number for ordering a combo of roasted meats at the local roaster .
You let the order taker know you want a 3 or a 4 in Hokkien , and then something like this will arrive at your table . Without costing you an arm and a leg at a swankier joint , this platter of roasted pork , chicken and duck comes with a price tag of less than 20 ringgit .

Don't be mistaken , this is not our entire order .
We added on a small bowl of Chai Boey Soup ( the spicy dish is drunk like a soup here ) . Wanted beansprouts but that was sold out , thus we settled for another vegie dish ( not recommending that , stick to the beansprouts ) and the all important oily bowl of plain Chicken soup for the Chinese soul .

What was most remarkable about this shop however , I find is not only the food itself , but the customers too .

Update August 1st 2016 : ( I don't know why they recently employed this impish teenager who used to work in Sin Nam Huat Pulau Tikus but his presence alone has single handedly plummeted the food quality to the dustbin . This boy should seriously be barred from the food service industry . Forget all that I have written below . You must eat the food hot and with a working airconditioner , plus they have to get rid of that ridiculous kid, if they are to be taken seriously again by me )

There are lots of male customers here .
When they come as a single walk in , lone diner , they end up ordering a heck of a lot than what we are normally used to seeing being ordered by local diners in chicken rice shops around the island .

It's when they begin eating and become immersed in a world of their own that it makes me break into a smile .
Astonishing how long it has been since I have seen grown Chinese men eat the way they do here .
They assume a hunched stance ,their mouths are poised like vacuums ....rice in front of the opening , full concentration as they perch rigidly like they are about to tear across the table with their chopsticks .

This is what they mean when they tell you about Chinese comfort food . The rice must be hot , it has to be fluffy and slightly moist , it should not stick to your chopstick and should there be a little dollop of sauce across a second helping  , you take that as your quiet reward as you swallow it greedily before it cools down .

Best eaten steaming hot , the hunched stance is an indication that they have thrown all decorum out the window only to eat in the most appreciative way that only an oriental can .

Kudos to the chef . You are great .

Your customers need not write some long winded piece like I need to here , when all they need do is eat and the individual stance they assume is all the testimony that you make our Chinese lives complete !

Location : Relau , Penang

Directions : from Bukit Jambul roundabout , head towards Pisa , stick to the right of the road when you pass the side of the building , there will be a traffic light . Pass a row of wooden shops on your right , come to another set of traffic lights , stick to the right . Turn right , Golden Triangle is the tall , new white building on the left .
