At 11pm , Jelutong is a locale which offers many food options for night owls . However , if you ask my honest opinion , a lot of the foods after dark is " beh chiak " ( awful ) .
Until , I recalled this place , so rather than go to the nearest Mamak or fastfood , let's have something more exciting for supper tonight .
Tomyam Maggi .
We Malaysians , refer to every instant noodle brand as Maggi you see , even though what they currently use here are noodles imported from China , we still call it Maggi .
They hand us a shallow dish and food thongs each , to pick the ingredients which we would like to go into our bowls . We pass it back and leave them with instructions on the type of noodle and soup we would like .
Yes , you do have a choice of noodles and they do have a non spicy soup option , but we were adamant on Tomyam Maggi ,as that is our all time favourite ( I only switch to rice vermicelli while at C.H.Tay in Alor Setar ) .

Despite the addition of long Chinese cabbage slices , it's HOT as hell and retains both heat and tanginess till the end !
Are we insane ? The evil concoction ( which includes boiled green chillies ! ) could burn a hole right through our intestines yet we find it so incredibly alluring and sexy , we just cannot stop . The more we continue , the hotter the build up gets and oh mai gawd , can someone please hand me a tissue to stop the sniffling ?
Love the soup stock . Tastes so rich , as if they'd taken hours to boil deep fried fish bones for hours on end , which kind of takes me by surprise , because I'd half expected it to turn out like all other Southern -Thai tomyam places in Penang ....plain .
Khidthung is the exception .
The environment on the other hand , is not for the faint hearted , especially at this time of the night . See , the area used to be quite notorious , known as a gangsters den . Today , that honour has gone to Air Itam but that's another story altogether .
- Best advice I can give you is to NOT stare at anyone , don't pick a quarrel for any reason whatsoever ( unless you'd like to wake up in a hospital ) , keep your eyes focused on your food ( not on the floor ) and absolutely try not to go to the loo while you are here ( because it is so gross ) .
