Smalltown jackfruit

Been a really long time since I've enjoyed jackfruit this small and pungent .

Really had to go off the beaten track just to lay my hands on this .

What's available nowadays is the larger variety called Nangka Madu . ( Nangka means jackfruit , whereas Madu is Honey ) . Now that , you can get almost everywhere , from roadside hawker cut fruit stalls to huge hypermarts .

When Nangka Madu was first introduced to us Malaysians some years back , it was so much more sweeter than the locally grown variety , that we soon preferred that to the small kampung variety .

Yet over time , the taste and colour has deteriorated to a point where we don't even feel like eating jackfruit anymore .

Thus , I consider it a sweet privilege to still be able to enjoy this sterling specimen . The bright yellow fruit was extremely aromatic , that it filled the entire car with its scent for hours.... so delicious , sharp and juicy , ah ...no hybrid can ever beat the original flavour , that's for sure .
