Uncle Jang , Vantage - bibs and tissues needed

A lot of mothers were dragged in here for Mother's Day and while I needed no persuasion  , I was rather surprised by the communal pojangmacha feel to the restaurant.
There is one stark difference other than the foreign workforce and that's the bright, half bibbed aprons hung on every chair

( NH ) Daorae Tg Tokong - sunken tatami vs the other side

This section, was where they treated us like Kings, on our previous visit

Today, however, we decided to sit over on the other side, just to see if there was a difference in the level of service.

Daorae Premium Korean Dining - Tg Tokong ( NH )

Whoever it was who started the rumour, that Psy came here because he was forced to meet someone, is spewing hot air from their behind .
If you wanna treat someone to authentic, delicious Korean food and make them feel special, this place is it ! Don't listen to the rumourmongers !

Noor Bee Nasi Melayu ( U )

Because they churn out some really fine foods,
I sometimes wish they were located somewhere far better than here.

It's a small family run business, well known amongst the islanders.
Comfort foods, so typically Tanjung Tokong style, yes that's what they serve here.
That means a great, winning hodgepodge mixture of Mamak , Pakistani, Penang and Kelantanese Malay, all mixed together, producing very unique ( but no less delicious ) curries with a hint of bitter.

Starbucks Drive In Outlet - now open in Tg Tokong

Have to admit I haven't stepped in yet.
But this piece of news will delight those in the northern region.
After all, we get loads of people pouring into the island every day, on the lookout for something new to pique their senses.

 Haven't stepped in yet, yep,
even though they are ( were) 2 tempting offers.

Ini Kampung Kami - Cucu Tok Non

Wonder why no newspaper has featured this yet.
The  Tanjong Tokong villagers fought off the eviction order hard as they could.
In their hopelessness this is a simple but powerful adieu that reaches deep into one's soul .

Don't know how long this will last but if you would like to view it, drive past Tesco Tg Pinang on your right, the painting is on your left just before the pedestrian bridge.

Nasir Pasembor Edgecumbe Road ( U )

This is the only Penang Pasembor stall which I will ever patronise.

They have one small shop in Gurney Drive, but it is located near Bali Hai seafood restaurant which is so far away from the popular hawker centre at the roundabout.

It's puasa month and he is now located at the Tg Tokong Param

His variety may not be vast but it is certainly fresh.

Satisfaction guaranteed .

Tanjung Tokong Ramadhan Bazaar ( New Location)

This once a year bazaar used to be held in a small lane next to the Tanjung Tokong police station quarters.

This is their new location now. Bigger, brighter, better organised and in an empty field annex to this mosque

Quite easy to find, along a small road inside the kampung that runs parallel to Tesco Tg Pinang

The bazaar is a little different these days.

There's even one stall selling Kek Lapis Sarawak.

So colourful !

Lots of work went into this.

Also, it is highly reassuring to know that the police are making their presence felt by parking themselves right smack in the centre.

Snatch thief deterrent No.1

While it's a comparatively small bazaar, nevertheless it is still interesting enough to tempt with a selection that is not overwhelmingly repetitive.

Just make sure you come early or you'll be faced with a wipe out zone.

( U ) Nameless Tomyam shack, Tanjung Tokong

Update : Closed down due to the development in Tg Tokong
------------------------------------------------

This is another tomyam shop operated by a Thai-Malay husband and wife team.

Always friendly and obliging, they even help cook fish, that local villagers bring to their shop, for a small fee.

Tanjung Tokong Rempits often hang outside this pathway for a drink and a smoke.

( U ) Tomyam at Mutiara Ombak, Tanjung Tokong

Update : the outlet has changed hands . This review is no more relevant . As the other operators across from Tesco are Indons and Cambodians , if you want Southern Malay Thai cuisine , Nurmee Seafood just outside Fettes Park is the closest to this

The people that run this Tomyam outlet are Thai-Malays .

This restaurant attracts a sizeable number of chinese customers because the chef whips out seafood dishes as if he had been under the tutelage of a chinese sifu.

As it is located along the main road
frontal, fringing the 100 year old or more, kampung Tanjung Tokong,
I don't know how much longer they can hold fort before UDA Holdings takes back the land.

( U ) Subaidah midnight desserts, Tanjung Tokong

18th july 2012 :

Don't bother stopping, they finally closed shop. Boon Siew has bought over the land. In case you still want to try it out, the nearest Subaidah is at Taman Pekaka near Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

Earlier post :

This nasi kandar restaurant used to be a very popular stop once upon a time.

Today it is mostly packed around 3am,
when an illegal mat rempit race is about to happen along this stretch .

( NH ) Sea Pearl Lagoon Cafe,Tanjung Tokong

This cafe is situated just next to the famous 18th century Tua Peh Kong temple , where the burning of jossticks is read annually, to predict the robustness or sluggishness of the Malaysian economy.

The village outside of the temple compound, is a Hakka fishing village that was one of the earliest settlements on Penang island.

Frog Porridge, Goodall Cafe ( NH )

Some people believe that frogmeat is supposed to be beneficial for cleansing our blood and perking up our constitution.

It is considered good for treating exhaustion, great for strengthening the immune systems in small children. Even better for women who seek a radiant complexion.

Almost wiped out and hunted to extinction, most of it that makes it to our table today is farm produced.
The method of slaughter however is starkly cruel on the same level as dog and whale meat.
Thus if you find this delicacy shockingly unagreeable, I would advise you not read on.

To make it sound more palatable, it is sometimes called 'tin kai' or padi chicken.
Whether it is farmed American bullfrog or river frog, whatever they label it,it is still frogmeat.
