Update , August 2014 : have not seen the old man in a long time and the noodles are just not the same anymore
----------------
This is the famous Wai Sek Kai in Chai Leng Park.
Dark and dimly lit but alive with great hawker food.
Dark and dimly lit but alive with great hawker food.
I trek across the bridge quite often for the chicken koay teow thng, sold by Heng Kee, a mobile hawker stall run by this old couple.
What the stall looks like, from the inside .
This large portion of hor fun ($7.00) contains 3 large deep fried wantan filled with prawns, 2 huge fishballs, lots of chicken meat, topped with chinese celery and spring onions.
The noodles are silky smooth. The portion tremendously filling. Fantastic.
If you find that too much, you can always call for a small bowl ($4.50) like the one in the picture below.
Take note however, that it doesn't come with deep fried prawn wantans.
Both soup stocks are intentionally plain, made from quick dipped chicken stock, served with a dash of pork lard oil.
Thus you will definitely need to add on soya sauce and pepper yourself, in order to flavour it.
The Foo Pei or beancurd skin sold here is delicious . Soak it in the soup like we did here, as it tastes better when soggy.
We added on green chillies because we're more interested in the fishpaste inside.Just superb.
End the meal with a massive bowl of Leng Chee Kang ($2.80) packed with goodies like attap chee, canned lychee, mata kucing, jelly, gingko, white cloud fungus, kidney beans, sago balls.....the list is endless !
Total damage : $29.00 for 2 large and 2 small horfun plus one bowl of 4 pieces of Foo pei and 2 green chillies.
Location : Chai Leng Park
Chowtime : 7.30pm - 10.30pm.
Directions : make your way towards Pearl View Hotel,it is located among the many clusters of shophouses located on the first turning to your left just before the hotel .
