Chip Heng - fancy cuts in kiam chye soup

Cabai is an integral part of the Penang diet as oxygen is to life .
You take away the cabai, sambal or cili padi and poof ,you extinguish the fire from a Penangite's very reason for living .

Over the top dramatics aside , the paired combination of thick soy treacle with tangy hot chilli paste is what maketh the shop , as well as what ignites and endows the salty sourish soup with that extra kick .

This cabai is unlike any you will ever have had before , it may look like cili boh but I am certain it is a special blend because it is so addictive , I felt so sexy mexy each time I dipped my chopstick in for another lick .

Cook Idea - Chai Leng Park

Before Cook Idea came along, we were all at the mercy of one super cut throat seller hawking this dish at Kampung Benggali.
Either that or we had to take a drive down to Ipoh or KL for kai see hor fun noodles.

Tai Lok Mee stall, Chai Leng Park ( NH )

If you love KL Hokkien Mee, this is the only place in Penang that makes the cut .

Have tried one stall in Datok Keramat Road (nowadays fail already) and another in Kimberley Street but both are just too dirty for me to stomach. The rest are just plain ugh ! Totally terrible.

One thing you must remember is that in Penang, the dish is called Tai Lok Mee and not Hokkien Mee.
If you insist on ordering Hokkien Mee, you will end up with a bowl of Har Mee instead .

These two handsome chefs are part of the 5 man tag team who run this perpetually busy stall

Heng Kee Koay Teow Soup, Chai Leng Park ( NH )

Update , August 2014 : have not seen the old man in a long time and the noodles are just not the same anymore
----------------

This is the famous Wai Sek Kai in Chai Leng Park.

Dark and dimly lit but alive with great hawker food.

I trek across the bridge quite often for the chicken koay teow thng, sold by Heng Kee, a mobile hawker stall run by this old couple.
