( U ) Tomyam at Mutiara Ombak, Tanjung Tokong

Update : the outlet has changed hands . This review is no more relevant . As the other operators across from Tesco are Indons and Cambodians , if you want Southern Malay Thai cuisine , Nurmee Seafood just outside Fettes Park is the closest to this

The people that run this Tomyam outlet are Thai-Malays .

This restaurant attracts a sizeable number of chinese customers because the chef whips out seafood dishes as if he had been under the tutelage of a chinese sifu.

As it is located along the main road
frontal, fringing the 100 year old or more, kampung Tanjung Tokong,
I don't know how much longer they can hold fort before UDA Holdings takes back the land.

I ponder over their continued existence over a big mug of frothy teh tarik.

Doesn't take long before the Tomyam Campur arrives.

Carefully relish the sour, spicy, tasty, rich stock, teeming with plenty of squid rings, chicken, beef and large prawns, as it is hot enough to warm the bottom of your stomach on the first sip.

That's why it is always handy to have this plate of ice cold cucumber ulam on standby.

Use the belacan dip if you're in a sadistic mood .

The Beef Padprik is most appetizing.

Consisting of small slices of pre boiled beef, cauliflower florets and chopped long beans, the inclusion of green chillies and sweet basil, makes it more savoury.

Usually the Ayam goreng tepung is a like a puffy odd shaped ball, but I don't know why todays version came out hard.

Maybe they ran out of oil.

Still the meat inside is a delight to munch on, as well as juicy.

If you've noticed by now already, an incredible amount of greens goes into each dish.

Even when it comes to this plate of fluffy Nasi Goreng Ikan Masin.

In case you are a first timer and don't know what to order, you can try out the set menus, displayed on this banner.

Prices start from $39 .
For that amount you get a fish, tomyam soup, kailan, rice as well as juice for two.

Total : $23 for all that plus 2 plates of white rice and an additional 2 cups of drinks

Location : Tanjung Tokong

Chowtime : 7pm to 1am

Contact : 012 564 0310

Directions : from Gurney Plaza head towards the direction of Tesco Tanjung Pinang, pass by a Caltex petrol station on your left, then 3 traffic lights, keep left on the third light. It is the 2nd tomyam shop before a primary school that is opposite Tesco.

Tips : the chef excels in deep fried whole fishes like siakap and bawal hitam. Udang masak merah, Sotong masak cili kering, Nasi Goreng Seafood, Kerabu Mangga, Nasi Goreng Special are dishes you should try. Also a lot of Malay customers prefer to order the beef soup that is served in a claypot.
