Canai Tomyam Cafe, Jalan Lembah Permai ( U )

Note : fast forward 2014. They have been chased out and replaced by a roti canai seller now. Was told that they have relocated a few doors down but when I tried out the food, the recipes just did not seem right. Tomyam was horrid, omelette terrible.
Well what to say when their chefs are now smoking keretek, an Indonesian ciggey. My guess is that Indons/ Suluks ( yes, they are here in Penang pretending to be Malays) have now resorted to hawking the popular Thai Malay food when they clearly have absolutely zero talent in cooking anything other deep fried fish. Sad case really but don't be fooled.

*********

The general complaint , is that the service here is incredibly slow. Not to worry. We weren't in a rush.

Ordered this huge basket of keropok with dip, to stave off hunger.
Wise choice on our part as other patrons were doing light neck and leg stretches every now and then as if we were all on board a long haul flight.

Petai masak ayam looks awesome . The petai is slightly bitter, with a powderish nutty texture.Very appetizing. Very spicy ! Delicious !
Supposed to be good for cleaning our kidneys. That's reason No.1 why I eat this strong smelling dish actually.

Taugey goreng ikan masin. Didn't really like this cos I never expected it to taste like the chinese Tau Miu sprouts . Can do without this next time. There was hardly any heady fragrance to make it mouthwatering.

Ikan kembung goreng kunyit. Still warm by the time it got to us. Seeing how hard it is to even buy this fish in the wetmarket, I would say this is a real treat.

If you're wondering why the plate looks a bit bare, it's because I'd already swiped a third one piled on top earlier (evil cackle) and taken a chunky bite out of it.

Totally demolished ! All this (plus mixed seafood soup and an onion omelette )inclusive of drinks cost just $32.30 .
Now you know why so many customers are willing to wait it out.

Directions : Tesco Tg Pinang on your right. Pass by an overhead bridge. After that, 4 traffic lights. Keep left, just before the 5th traffic light turn left. There will be a whole row of tomyam stalls. This one has the most people in it.
If that is too complicated for you, look for Good Hope Motel in Tg Bungah. Walk across to the opposite side of the road between a driving school and Happy Mart convenience store.

Tips : Cats are a problem. They beg, will put their paws on you,rub their tails against the table and don't take no for an answer. Bachelors living just next to this shop like to blast techno beats from their car stereo .
