Tai Lok Mee stall, Chai Leng Park ( NH )

If you love KL Hokkien Mee, this is the only place in Penang that makes the cut .

Have tried one stall in Datok Keramat Road (nowadays fail already) and another in Kimberley Street but both are just too dirty for me to stomach. The rest are just plain ugh ! Totally terrible.

One thing you must remember is that in Penang, the dish is called Tai Lok Mee and not Hokkien Mee.
If you insist on ordering Hokkien Mee, you will end up with a bowl of Har Mee instead .

These two handsome chefs are part of the 5 man tag team who run this perpetually busy stall

Here's an overall view of their culinary operative mission .
Everyone has their own role to play.

The chefs cook but this fella in green stripped shirt is the waiter, order taker, table clearer, cashier etc etc. so do be patient with him.
It's only 6pm and he's already looking like he usually does (trying to juggle everything inside his head ) when you see him after 10pm.

Other than Tai Lok Mee, they are also known for their Sang Mee. Check out the stacks of noodles freshly prepared on the spot for that purpose. Nope, they don't get it from a middle man.

Also try to spot the wooden clothes pegs . It's a sophisticated chinese restaurant system only they can understand.

The younger chef specialises in deep frying the yee mee noodles and concocting the Kungfu chau clear sauce.
The Sang Mee here is given a local twist where a whole raw egg is cracked on top of the noodles.
If you are squeamish about that, remember to omit the egg.

I'm not eating in today. I've brought my own tiffin.

This is my takeaway order....Hokkien Char Beehoon with chai sim , fresh kacang ( local slang for deep fried pork fat ), sotong, pork slices and prawns .

With a generous portion of authentic sambal (can't find this anywhere else either, no one seems to get this right on Penang Island ) to go with it

Prices are extremely reasonable.

Location : Chai Leng Park, Butterworth

Directions : look for Pearl View Hotel and go to the back where there are rows of shophouses. If you are driving, the system is too complicated to explain. Easier to walk in first. Just head right to last road before the housing estate, turn left and walk almost to the end of the long row of hawkers. The stall is directly opposite a shoplot with the word "Tai Lok Mee" on it .

Chowtime : around 6.30pm till 10.30 pm
