D600 - characteristic hint of sour

I used to just take durians for granted . We could get them so cheap last time , it was possible to enjoy a whole small durian for just 5 ringgit , before investors from China came in and bought acres after acres of our durian farmlands .

Today , the cheapest price we can get for less popular Penang cloned durian species starts from 30 ringgit per kilo . Durian kampung costs 15 ringgit per kilo. So pathetic !

Which is sad , because poorer folks or those with heavy financial burdens , simply cannot afford them anymore .

This packet of D600 durians you see below , cost us 50 ringgit .
The trader wanted 54 at first , I gave him an outraged look and beat it down eventually .
For your info , 50 ringgit can buy up to 5 kilos worth of raw chicken breast meat at the local wetmarket so , it is a whole lot of money for people earning bare minimum wages in this country .

Anyway , I know some of you enjoy reading my description of our local durians , so here we go .

The colour of the D600 durian from Balik Pulau is an intense rich yellow , upon opening , when the flesh is revealed , it looks like painted in lightbulbs ,as the shade stands out beautifully against the white compartment.
Flesh and seed ratio is almost equal .

The first bite you take , up to the subsequent first 3 or 5 fruits will start off at first , as ice creamy sweet , then gradually build up to very sweet ( as if someone had boiled it in sugar ) before it wanes down , and every subsequent fruit thereafter will come with a hint of sourness .

Now this will not only confuse you at first , it will also make you question if you have just purchased a bad fruit .
Rest assured it is not .
The sour aftertaste is characteristic of this particular species .
Slightly fibrous , thin top membrane which comes off like milk skin , bit runny and mushy after that , not as firm as other durians breeds .

What I really enjoy about the fruit most , is that final film which wraps itself around the seed .
Mmmmmm...... there seems to be a wider layer with a whole lot of crunch to it .

How would I rate this fruit overall ?
Almost like having a very light , watery yogurt .

Unlike the Black Pearl , this durian does contain the traditional heaty properties one would expect of a Malaysian durian .However , you won't feel too warm to the point that you need to take cooling drinks to bring the temperature down .

But oh mai gawd , everyone will know that you had durians for the next few hours or so , because the aroma will not only stick , you will belch and " let go " some unpleasant gases unexpectedly but not too many times to come off as gross , during that time .
Less gassy , no less potent , just a bit sour if you can get past that . Think of it as having light durian yogurt .
