Yong Pin Restaurant ( NH )

9th January 2013 :

forget everything I said earlier. I ate here today and almost everything was capital FAIL . Only the Tai pau and a peanut mochi dessert wrapped in pandanus leaf passed the test.

Earlier post :

This is not your modern day typical Penang establishment although it spouts a new makeover .

Brightly lit, clean and almost spotless. What more can one ask for ?

Their flavours and recipes are mostly long forgotten but worth many repeat visits for the sake of experiencing the nostalgia of carefully made, good quality food .

Everything is prepared in small batches and cooked on the spot. The best part is they still employ bamboo steamers as you can see in the front corner of the shop.

Their mastery and skill at making fine dimsum puts them in a league of their own .

The prawn dimsum is especially good .

Fine membrane encasing juicy whole scrumptious prawns inside.

I won't be as bold as to rate their siew mai as above average, but it is definitely way better than a whole lot of other similar establishments, in and around Georgetown

Lor Mai Kai is a real extravagant gesture because compared to others, they haven't left out a single ingredient.

An absolute must try to see what you've been missing out on.

While we also ordered some delicious noodles and fried rice, they did not turn out picture perfect. So as not to spoil your appetite , I have purposely left them out.

But rest assured that even though you might find their noodle recipes a tad too salty, they are quite good really.

Location : Jalan Sungai Ujong

Directions : on foot from the bus stop in front of Prangin Mall, look for a 7 eleven on the left. Cross the road to where a handphone shop lies at the corner and walk towards the middle.

Chowtime : 6am to 12 noon, 7pm to 12 midnight

Tips : since everything is made in small batches, a lot of the bestseller run out fast, Therefore this is one of those places where you'll have to cram in during the peak periods if you want the old favourites
