( U ) Nasi Kandar Jelutong - Penang's No.1 Nasi Kandar

Update 26th May 2013 :
Massive development in Jelutong has swallowed up this place. The entire row of shophouses have been boarded up.
If I ever locate their new premises, I will post it up here

---------------------

This Nasi Kandar stall is rated by many as the Number One Nasi Kandar in the whole of Penang.
The frenzied pace at the counter, starts as early as 6am here.

Right here is the kandar or carrying case which sellers of old, used to lug around town, hawking their wares, especially around the port area.
When you see this in a nasi kandar shop, it speaks volumes of the long history they have being associated to this dish.

The best thing about this kopitiam isn't just limited to the good food.
This laid back scene, is one thing we see disappearing more and more as the years go by.

Chinese coffeeshop. Mamak food.
Malay, chinese and indian customers, together under one roof.
In quiet enjoyment. At 6.30 am. Waiting for their food to be delivered to their table.
The old Malay man you see in the corner of this picture was joined by his chinese friend at the same table later on.
I took in their jovial exchanges and celebrated it in my heart very quietly.

If you have no patience to wait, this is the take away counter.
Join the queue and quickly decide what you want

Yes, Penang men think nothing of downing a big plate of Kandar in the morning.
Keeps them hale,hearty and strong.
Our order soon arrived.

The secret to their success, lies in the chemistry of kuah campur ( mixture of the various sauces ) together with the rice.
The sauces act as a shield to keep the rice piping hot.
Rice has a very fragrant kandar tinge to it ( like it were cooked in some natural bamboo or leaf vessel ) and is not as salty as other places.
The humble egg...is so tender yet firm, you want to kiss the chef ( there's only one other place in Penang island, that serves this kind of hard boiled egg, if only I can remember where )

Yep, this is what I devoured. A mountain of rice, super spicy shiok kuah, ladies fingers and egg....

...together with this.
OMG...the chicken is deep fried and the spices are so, so, so good.
Better and hotter than Transfer Road roti canai's chicken curry.
Makes your saliva curdle the more you eat it.
Take note that the chicken is deep fried first, therefore the outside is quite chewy and tough, but when you get to the white meat..the juicy tenderness will make you think you died and went straight to heaven.

His order.
Squid, beef ( be warned that this is tough ), ladies fingers and egg.

How to locate.
One.
If you're coming from Komtar, head towards Jalan Jelutong and make sure you don't bypass this shop.

Two.
If you're coming from the bridge, look out for this police station.

Beware of oncoming traffic and getting mixed up as to how to drive when you get here.
Also, notice the Jaguar parked on the side ?
Told you this is Number One didn't I ?

Location : Jelutong

Chowtime : 6am to best before 8am

Tips : while the kopitiam has a predominantly male clientele, don't get turned off like most Malaysian women do by that and resort to take away. This should be eaten fresh and hot on the spot. If you're not accustomed to it, take a male buddy along. Or best still come with a gaggle of girlfriends .
