Wantan mee with a roast platter - Pusat Pengkalan Enam Enam

KL style wantan mee and Ipoh style wantan mee are very closely related .
Whereas Penang wantan mee is completely different from these 2 styles . I prefer the former .
You also should not compare Hong Kong or San Francisco style wantan mee to this . In both megacities , the springy texture of the noodle and taste of the sauces vastly differ from what is found in Ipoh . However , if you love London chinatown style wantan mee , please continue eating it in London and don't try this . I'm serious .

And it was on a quest for Ipoh roasted meats ( thanks to Hawker Chan hype ) that I found this stall near Station 18 .
We had earlier on purchased a big , beautiful platter in a hawker centre which was so shocking ( for 17 ringgit only , when it looked like it was worth 48 ringgit ! ) I forgot to snap a pic , so what you see here is actually the second plate after we demolished the first plate of wantan mee ( this costs less than 6 ringgit if I am not mistaken ), plus a platter of 4 .... roast pork , roast duck , roast chicken , char siew ( sadly also no picture as proof but it was so well presented , that I almost fainted from shock  ) .

Hong Kee Wan Thun Mee - bamboo kungfu for ultra springy wantan mee

Update : the problem with this operator is , it can be quite unhygienic . There , I've said it . If you go please make sure you either keep your eyes wide open or half shut .

-------

Was very direct with the noodle man , when I saw him .
" I've been waiting for you for a really long time to resurface already "
( they were the original hawkers at the formerly famous corner kopitiam called Yi Garden Cafe on Macalister Road , you see )

Wantan mee al dente - Boon Seng , Jalan Dedap

Most lady chefs do not make the cut when it comes to whipping up this dish . They just do not have the skill required to coax the noodle into the right consistency nor tweak the sweet treacle into one with an aftertaste which customers will come back for.

( NH) Eng's Noodles - Jalan Raja Uda

We're pretty early. Explains the lack of crowd. Don't worry, the place will soon fill up.

For less than Rm $30, 'kacang' fans, who are not afraid to stare high cholesterol in the face and wolf it down, will know they've found their grease heaven.

Padang Brown hawker food ( NH )

It's been years since I last came here . Think there are less hawkers these days .However unlike ten years ago, today, there's rubbish all over the ground, discarded by couldn't care less customers.

Ordered wantan mee because it seemed to be a crowd favourite here.
At $3 per bowl (crazy cheap),I think they're actually doing everyone a great service . The dumpling has more meat than other places and the whole dish provides a substantial meal.

Kedai Kopi Soon Yuen ( NH )

What's there to eat here for breakfast?
Believe me....a lot ....

Start with the best game textured duck meat dish you'll ever come across.
Garnished with fried garlic, sawi and beansprouts.
Make sure you order this early or they'll only have the kampung chicken left ( which is way tougher ).

How Ji Roaster Rice Noodle, Restoran Hup Kee ( NH )

The thought of coming to this coffee shop gives me quite a headache, as it is one of those places that attracts smokers.

Usually nobody dares to light up until the first one does. Then it sparks a chain reaction which makes us non smokers wanna get up and give them a hard swat.

However, the lure of How Ji's roasted duck paired with dry wantan noodles was far too great for me to abstain for too long.
I march in hoping for an invisible screen against the bunch of light upers who don't seem to understand that we DO mind inhaling second hand smoke.

Yi Garden Cafe, Jalan Macalister ( NH )

December 2014 : hawkers and owners do have tiffs and due to incessant raids by the authorities for health offences, some of the hawkers have moved out. The wantan mee can now be found in Kampung Malabar.

Update 22nd March 2013 :

Wantan mee fail (too much boric acid, soup lousy, portion less ), Tokyo seafood fail ( no taste, don't know how to cook) Oyster mee fail ( greenish tinged oysters)
Only edible items to me now is the wantan dumpling and chicken feet from the pan mee seller (very blady expensive now)

---------------------------------
Yi Garden Cafe, has a good selection of stalls to please the palates of locals and foreigners alike.

From Seafood Chu Cha, Oyster Omelette and Pan Mee to Lobak, Char Horfun and Offal Porridge, every stall here, has managed to garner a loyal following of their own.

Though crowded it's quite easy to find a seat because the atmosphere inside is stuffy .

In fact it is so warm and humid, everyone eagerly finishes up their meal so they can escape into the cool air outside.
