Try not to mistep in the conservative district

With all the constant digging around, one really has not only to watch your step in this district but to be respectful of what behaviours are not acceptable among the sexes.
Still, coming from Malaysia, because I felt alright in this
area, I momentarily forgot to check myself.

Bought a handcarved comb from this old Turkmenistan
man. In my eagerness to choose, I made the mistake of
sitting on the stairs next to him to select what I wanted. He
played it cool but I sensed his discomfort and when I got up
to put a further distance between us, boy,was he relieved.

Later on, I chanced upon these Turkish ladies saying an open
prayer by a small cemetery. Seemed to be praying a long
time, even though they were just standing there. These small
burial plots can be found all over . Most times they remain
pretty unnoticeable unless you really open your eyes and
take a good hard look. Still, me and cemeteries, erm, not
very "ngam". Which explains why I'm at a 'safe' distance
from across the road

The tiny building next door is a village head's beat.
Wasn't open since it was a Sunday.

It is also here, that you can find more ladies covered up from head to toe , dressed just in black like the woman below.
Fatih can be enjoyable to explore just make sure that you are in tune with the local culture with no mistep.

Location : Fatih Mosque locality

Quaint little mosque in Fatih - Atikali Camii Mescidi

The little mescidi lay across from this doner joint where I had stopped for a breather.
Instead of coke or Turkish cay, I went for a bottle of Frutti Extra. Not bad actually ..

On with the exploring .
Looking at this photo, one might think I'm in say...an Italian seaside village rather than in Istanbul.
Quaint....laidback , really enjoying this

The Aksaray tram station

In the few days I was here, this was generally my start off and get off point, from morning till sundown. Compared to
Aksaray Metro station further down the road , though I still got plenty of looks...

Good thing is there are no touchy feely , sneaky prodding fellas in this Tram station to contend with.

Pretty flowers lining Sehzadebasi Caddesi

This pic shows just how irresistible Istanbul is to shutterbugs

The grass was emerald, the cherry blossoms had come to life, and the impatients were just spectacular

Street drummer boy and his merry band of angels

They put a smile on everyone's faces with their antics on the streets. This bunch of angels may look sweet and innocent, but they came equipped with enough street smartness to know how to run away from authorities.

Most adults enjoyed their impromptu dance performance so much so that some were compelled to give them whatever small change. They never begged, they didn't have too, they were just soooo cute and adorable !

Little Russia in Istanbul

Walking upwards towards the direction of the Grand Bazaar, from Aksaray tram station, you will pass the Laleli Mosque.
When you see this, follow this side of the road , and you will soon see shops with signs in Russian along the way

Men lugging boxes full of merchandise, clothes, cloth etc is
the norm all over the city. Never tire seeing them at work though.

Portukal Suyuk - sweetest orange juice ever

If my guess is right, Portukal Suyuk means Portugal orange, juiced.
And yeah, I know, where I am.

Did not intend to try it because you know, the oranges suppliers bring into Malaysia are almost like lottery luck. Sometimes they're so darned sour, I wonder why I evenbother to believe the sugar coated lies.

Cherry blossoms burst to life in Sultanahmet

Japan and even Washington have famous cherry blossom lined avenues and parks which tourists fly in to see..

...but wait till you see the occasional specimens growing in Istanbul.

Suleymaniye Mosque - world heritage site, don't miss it

The Suleymaniye Mosque was built during the Ottoman period by Suleiman the Magnificent. It is the largest mosque in Istanbul and can be seen from the Galata Bridge.
1557 is a really loooong time ago, but extensive preservation has helped maintain the very pristine and stunning architecture to enthrall visitors till this day.

Not to worry if you come without a guide, info
can be found on signboards outside this World Heritage site.

Hooded crows within the Suleymaniye Mosque compound

Strangely enough, I feel that there is a lot of English influence in the conceptualisation of this World Heritage site. Felt that there was a decidedly cathedral feel to the building , even the green grounds itself.

Didn't go into the mosque itself because I was distracted by this curious collection of birds on the grounds outside.
Almost like what one can find in the grounds outside the Tower of London.
Except that these are hooded crows and not ravens with superstition attached.

Lamb everywhere you look - Kadinlar Pazari

Never seen so much lamb sold in so many lamb shops in such a small area before.

You get all kinds of shoppers here, families, ladies...

Little Kurdistan - Kadinlar Pazari

In my confusion, I thought I had failed at locating little Kurdistan . Had mistakenly thought it was inside Fatih.
Hence few hours later, as I made my way out, I started looking for Siirt Seref to grab a buryan bite it was famed for.

Ngeh ngeh ngeh.
Of course that called for another pose , just for the " I was here " record.

The Bicycle brigade stops traffic on one lane

Welcome to Fatih.
Whenever there's a jam or bottle neck, omg, the horns start blaring non stop...

....but this was something else.
Cars were either honking in support or pissed off with this bicycle brigade blocking one lane of the traffic

The daily market outside the Fatih mosque

You really don't have to wait for the famous Wednesday Pazari,
as there's a cute daily market to be found here, just waiting for you to explore.

There are a few entry points to the mosque behind but this in my opinion is the most picturesque of all.

Personal encounters with some horny men in Istanbul.

Since I went solo this time, I found out for sure, that when you are a single female foreign traveller and you walk into the Aksaray metro area at night you are really asking for trouble.
I had 2 men ( both older, separate times ) pretending to walk with me ( like I was with them) , one tall baldish well built Jewish looking guy sticking to me at the traffic lights, another 20ish shorter man leering and grinning at me until I got the hell out and  reached the safe area of Aksaray tram stop area which is about 200 metres from the Aksaray metro area.

I also had my voluptous derriere prodded sneakily from behind the cover of a canvass bag on the tram itself in Sirkeci, by someone who looked Cumberbatch ( shocking ! ) , my hand held and caressed by someone who looked like Mika . The Mika lookalikealso attempted to put a necklace around me but I ran off quickly before he could.

And then there was this fellow.

Lunch at Tatseven

If you're a single female foreign traveller, you will be treated very kindly and respectfully by the good men in Tatseven.
The outlet is just opposite the Aksaray tram station. Walk away from the station with the mosque behind you and you will be welcomed most graciously by the gentlemen here.

Picking a spot out in the open this time, as it's a sunny lovely day , not too cold.

Fevi Pasa Caddesi - the big fat wedding gown street

And so I ventured into the conservative district of Fatih.

When the streets start to clog up, the incessant honking on a scale of madness begins. Put that minor annoyance aside and instead focus on the most unique part about this caddesi ....the endless bridal shops filled with garish to elegant get ups. Like a wedding street or something.

Namli Gurme - Karakoy

Hung around the New Mosque waiting for the sunset before sauntering along the Galata Bridge into Karakoy.

By the time I reached the other side, it was this dark. Yet compared to Aksaray metro last night ,only one chap tried to stop me in my tracks and get me to drink tea a couple of stories upstairs ( they'll make sure no single woman ever stays lonely in Istanbul ). When I walked back the same way after my meal , there he was, still trying to get me up to the roof to take pics from the balcony this time.
But he was ok, not so menacing, I can handle him. He won't stress me out enough into having to plan an escape route as he jabbers away.

Gala Kokorec

This is kokorec, stuffed sheep's intestines and I am determined to try it today since it's reputed to be good.

Valens Aqueduct - currently my fav Istanbul attraction

The Valens Aqueduct was built during the Roman times.
Can't believe that I passed by this the last time and didn't even take a second look.
Today, I'm snapping a pic together with my haul of LC Waikiki clothes ( a Turkish brand with clothes made from China lol ) nvr mind.

Guess where seagulls take their bath

Walking out from the Sulaimaniye Mosque towards the Ataturk Boulevard, you will come across this building on your left.
But something caught my eye and I'm walking in for a better look

Back to Aksaray Tram Station. Forget Aksaray Metro surrounds.

Got scared half out of my wits tonight as I braved myself up and walked towards Historia Mall.
One older guy accosted me as I was approaching the Metro and he just wouldn't go until I stopped and walked the other way just to shake him off.
Then later at the pedestrian crossing as I was walking back, I noticed a taller fellow around my age group stuck to me again ( yes, so stupid, while I was at the lights for gawds sakes ) until I moved away from him, only to get winked and leered at by another younger guy flanking him.
Aaarrrgghhh !!!!
Getting the hell out of here.

Siirt Seref - Kurdish lamb

Siirt Seref is a local institution in this nice little area known as little Kurdistan.
It's very easy to find once you locate the Valens Aqueduct.
Notice that the roman structure is just next to the building

Welcome to the world of lamb.
This counter lies next to the door.

Vaha Aile Caybehsi - Turkish tea under the trees

And so I wandered right into the heart of Fatih today.
Was a bit of a shock compared to Sultanahmet where everything is near perfect.
Roads were dug up, witnessed a bicycle protest, walked along the wedding street where drivers went half mad trying to ease the jam by honking.

Beautiful things happen at Gulhane Park

My first visit was during autumn last year and while Topkapi grounds were awesome what with clusters of fallen leaves I thought Gulhane looked rather sad back then.
Until that is my revisit here earlier today

The blooms were so magnificent, cheerful and breathtaking everyone turned photographer. There were beautiful scenes everywhere.
Like this little girl posing for dad.

The most beautiful thing about the tulips here is that they're so, so fragrant !

Closest I've ever gotten to a wild seagull

Out of the whole pack circling the boats, this fella pulls away and to my surprise lands right in front of me.
First I think he's hungry, damn, I have no bread.
Never mind, let's take pics.

Istanbul Tulip Festival 2014

Ever seen bright as flourescent tulips ?
It's a first for me. They were off the main path cos if they had been they'd be trampled by enthusiastic people/ tourists/ locals posing for pictures or sprayed at by vengeful cats.

See for yourself.
Compare with the colour of the foliage and other blooms.

Tatseven - Aksaray

As it goes, I am new to Aksaray. Haven't explored this side before. So what to do, I ask the nice uncle behind the reception desk what's nice.
He looks a little worried but after I tell him I love Turkish food, he says " Tatseven " with that Italian gesture that means " mamamia it's sooooo delicious " ( if you know what I mean )
Then I ask him, is the area safe ? He looks me up and down and says with a shrug " Ok, no problem "
Here I am

Osman Balikcisi - Deep fried anchovies

No I didn't stumble upon this. I was introduced by a local. He said with all earnestness in his eyes that
" this is good, believe me "
Well ok, I WAS hungry and how did he know.
So here goes

20 million tulips

2014 marks yet another Tulip Festival in Istanbul . A remarkable 20 million bulbs have been planted all over the city.
Why aren't you here yet ?

Good morning Istanbul

First Turkish breakfast in the quarter they call the Real Istanbul. Very basic.
Tomatoes and cheeses that just sing to you.
Cucumber...meh...
Bread tough until I dipped it into the tasty lentil soup with tons of spices. Nice.
2 hard boiled eggs. Olives ( of course )
Ham which is ok with me but the locals don't like at all.
Coffee.

Location : Istanbul

Time there now : 10:13 am as of reediting

Hitting the transit lanes again

From what I gather,
"Yalla, yalla, yalla, yalla" roughly  means
" Come on, hurry up "
"lai, lai , kia , kia"
" mari, mari, cepat, cepat"
or something to that effect if  I'm not wrong.
( Man , I've now progressed to guessing an Arabic
term and translating that into a dialect and 2 languages . Chronic )

Indies Restaurant

" But it's an Indian drive through, worse still, it's under a fast food concept "
Guilty as charged. Yup, I have to admit, I was being biased without even stepping in first. Anyway, we're here already and looking at the menu, again I have my doubts.
So many things, sure or not you can cook ?

Hariyali Kebab.
Thick , big chunks of chicken breast, marinated in green paste combo with a minty dip on the side. I'm impressed as the chunks are much larger than another operator opposite Flamingo Hotel albeit a bit on the dry side.
Nice.

Use by 2015

It's not much, but it does come in handy to knock off the price of a tour package, well....just maybe.

Got plenty of time to decide when I wanna redeem this.
But right now, I'm in the midst of preparing. So later....

Wednesday, 9 April 2014

Pathetic but very practical

So, yeah, I finally succumbed and got myself a small selfie stick. That sad, sad, solo travellers best , best buddy. Lolz.
* Boohoohoohoo *

Nestle Crunch - tall ceramic mug

Well....by the time I found this , there were only 3 mugs left. Had bought a multipack ( priced less than RM13) with the picture of the mug on it.

Strange bedfellows and a bunch of bananas

Redhead offers a chirpy " Hi ! " to the our new dorm mate. German girl says " Hi ! " back and breaks into a smile.
She wasn't in the night before . Passed us at breakfast in a weird huff without making any eye contact.

Israeli girl : " And you are from ...? "
German     : " Germany "

The redhead's eyes almost pop out , her face changes. Turning from soft and bubbly into a hard fiery Hellish stare. Beezeejuls.
Me , I'm taken aback cos I was happily watching those two getting to know each other initially. The eye language is a universal thing among us women. The German went like blank for a moment.Fact 3 of us went like blank for a while until miss centrefold stormed out of the dorm. Shit, what's going on. God.That was not only awkward, it was so darn scary and uncomfortable. We didn't talk. I knew she was upset, but I really didn't know what to say that would make her feel better.
