Four Seasons Tea Restaurant - Bayan Lepas (NH )

This restaurant remains a firm favourite, while their other branch in town has faltered .
However, don't expect much from their service crew and you'll emerge just fine.

Diners, while mostly casually attired, are here for the reasonably priced , good food.
Some of them act like its their own home, hoisting 2 feet up onto the chair as they dig into their favourite dishes.
You may have to close one eye, to not only that balkingly rude behaviour, but also to the beat up fixtures that have seen better days.

The best durians outside Balik Pulau ( U )

There are vendors in town who have the privilege of reserving some of the best trees from the area, to their customers convenience, and this is the one, you have to look out for.

He is "expensive but good "
gushed an old achim who recommended this place to me.

Select your fruit, get it weighed, pay for your purchase, then sit back and enjoy the view as you dine beneath the canopy of umbrellas and trees

Restoran Minah - Gelugor ( U )

This shop is a real throwback to the 70s.
It's also so much cleaner, with an environment that is much more pleasant , compared to the other great Minangkabau restaurant inside Georgetown.
The only drawback is parking, which can be quite a challenge as the area has limited space only.

It may be further from everything, yet manages to attract a good mix of local and Indonesian customers

Fried chinese pastry van outside Lye Lye ( NH )

Didn't take much notice of this white mobile van on the left hand side of the building, until today.

Because, I had initially come to this kopitiam for some loh bak .
Don't know what happened, only the tofu and century egg was edible this time around.
It was good last time but now beh chiak already.
The fishball was sour, the small popiah like getah.
Why oh why ?

Dave's Deli ( PF )

Expect nothing less than good, wholesome food from this particular Dave's Deli outlet.
Customers have to line up and order food canteen style but who's complaining when there's no additional taxes on an incredibly reasonable bill ?

Always look forward to the roast chicken.
Portion is definitely larger than their competitors, mashed potatoes are really creamy and delicious.
Salads always perfect and crunchy.

Restoran Sup Hameed ( U )

Although this is the best place for sup kambing in Penang, I usually resort to takeaway because the whole restaurant from outside to inside is infested with smokers .

Thus today is the first time after many, many, many years, that I am eating in .
But it doesn't take long for me to regret that decision especially when I'm drinking mutton soup, under a choking haze of Marlboro and keretek.

Springs Town Restaurant ( NH )

Every Penangite worth their salt, knows how to sniff out and make a beeline, for an out of the way, gem such as this.

Prices of most dishes are so ridiculously low , you might want to pinch yourself,
seeing that the setting inside, is almost palatial with nice airconditioning and lighting even

Passions of Kerala ( PF )

This restaurant combines the best of both worlds....
a nice banana leaf meal, in clean, air conditioned comfort .

One vegetarian set costs just $5.50

Xuan Xin Restaurant - Gurney Plaza ( NH )

Every dish here, bears a sticker with the name, of the respective Master who concocted it.
Most dishes start off nicely, only to turn unbearable before you're even halfway through .

Lotus root fried with mok yee, snowpeas and carrots. Although everything had a nice crunchy texture , it was a sad case of taste overload.
Too much wine, fermented red bean overdose.

3 quarters left uneaten.

Aluminium foil grilled seafood parcel - Aeon Arena ( U )

When I crave for Portuguese grilled seafood conjured up by a famous hawker in Petaling Street, I come here...yes to an airconditioned food court stall , which I will normally avoid like the black plague.

Obviously the original stall is incomparable ( what with his tightly guarded super duper top secret recipe ), but since it's extremely hard finding something even remotely resembling this particular dish up north (everything in aluminium foil is either otak2 or tomyam inspired) , this is as close as it gets .

2nd tongue burning experience at Mall's Cafe ( NH )

First mouthwatering bowl of the most mind blowing spicy, southern tomyam.
Selection of fishballs, 3 button mushrooms, tofu , 2 vegies, half a portion of instant noodles = $7

2nd bowl
Fishballs , 2 prawns, brown sotong , foochuk , instant noodle
$10

2nd dinner at Lebanon, Batu Feringghi ( U )

Following my earlier visit, the day before, (refer to http://gostansikit.blogspot.com/2012/10/lebanon-restaurant-batu-feringghi.html ).....this time we went for the Grilled chicken ( no pics because we bulldozed straight into it) , Hawaiian pizza ( same case) , a fish briyani (very good)  and the Greek salad ( only recommended for people who like homemade spanish salads) ....

Tried the Lebanese cocktail
So, so....

Hokkien Mee - Menara Asas ( NH )

Update Jan 2017 : we just found out that this original famous Hokkien Mee stall has shifted to the Tg Bungah wetmarket foodcourt . Best to go and get your fix early in the morning .
The stall inside this kopitiam is no longer the same operator .

*************

Original post from 2012 :

While a lot of people swear that this is one of the best Hokkien mee stalls on the island today, so far,  it hasn't managed to lure out of state visitors to make a beeline here.... yet.

We placed our order with one of the two sisters and sat right at the back.
The stall is on the left hand corner of this photograph

Lebanon Restaurant , Batu Feringghi ( U )

Batu Feringghi it was tonight, as I craved for Middle Eastern food.
Upon opening the menu, I found that they didn't just specialize in Lebanese or Middle Eastern fare.
But western grill selections with spaghetti and pizza ???
Have to admit I thought of walking out, but I am very glad I stayed .

Lamb Briyani.
Panicked because all I saw was a mountain of colourful, rice.
While the rice was a little on the dry side, as well as a little salty, I found it most fragrant and enjoyed the texture immensely.
Seriously..the best briyani rice I have had on Penang Island to date.

Merlin Nasi Kandar ( U )

This is one Nasi Kandar you absolutely must try.

But you might regret it because from then onwards you will always 'gian' for it thereafter

As you can see, the crowd comprises of a very muhibbah mix of young and  old, from labourers and cleaners, to bankers and office workers.

Free View , Cheap Food near Queensbay ( U )

Chances are most of you would not know that this place even existed .
There are a few pasar malam style traders that open here on a daily basis and I guess you have to try them out one by one first before you find one that you like the best.

The main draw however is the fact that you get to dine on a sandy beach with a free view of the Penang Bridge. Simply spectacular ....how can you beat that?

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co at The Curve

One might be forgiven for thinking that a Long Beach diner had been airlifted right smack into the middle of Mutiara Damansara

The entire restaurant is doted with memoribilia connected to the movie Forrest Gump

Nasi Hadramot, Jalan Sultan Ismail ( U )

Hadramot lies just at the corner of the entrance into the Ain Arabia enclave in Bukit Bintang.

Looks pretty luxurious from the outside, but once on the inside, um, it's better to focus your attention on the food.

There's no clear non smoking section and the foreign customers here seem to like to use dividers to ensure their privacy. Not that I'm against it just that I felt kind of odd.
